At the present moment there are only two Master’s and Doctorate Programs in the state of Mato Grosso accredited with grade 5 (in a range from 1 to 7 where 7 is the highest score) according to CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel). We are proud to be one of them!

The Master’s Program in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation, in the Federal University of Mato Grosso, started its activities in 1993 and in 2011 we opened the Doctorate Program. The main objectives of our program are (i) to train scientists with great innovation skills, and theoretical and practical knowledge in ecology; (ii) to strengthen research in the Mid-West of Brazil, especially in Pantanal (the Wetlands), Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) and the Amazon region, besides producing new knowledge and solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources and the development of human activities; (iii) to train professionals to work in teaching, research and technology development in universities, research institutes, companies, government agencies and private entities. In 2008, we created the research line “Natural History, Ecology and Systematics of Organisms”, aimed at understanding biodiversity patterns. In 2015, this research line was changed into “Biogeography and Natural History”, after the Graduate Program in Zoology was created in UFMT, thus inheriting the research line “Taxonomy and Systematics”.

Currently, our program is evaluated by the Biodiversity committee of Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES).

Our work is focused on Ecology (organization of biological diversity) and divided into three research lines: Population Ecology and Genetics, Community Ecology and Ecosystems, and Biogeography and Natural History.

In the last two assessments by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), our graduate program went from grade 3 to 5 in 2013. We are working hard to improve even more. On behalf of the Graduate Program in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation, we would like to thank all those who work or worked for our development.

Research areas

Ecology (Organization of Biological Diversity)

Comprises the study of distribution and abundance of organisms, the interaction among them, and the standards that determine biological diversity in aquatic, terrestrial and transition environments, besides the study of ecological processes in the ecosystems of Pantanal (the Wetlands), Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) and the Amazon Region.

Research lines

Population Ecology and Genetics

This research line is aimed at understanding population aspects related to population size, population viability, conservation, genetic diversity and population management. The permanent researchers of this research line are Paulo Venere, Lucia Mateus, Jerry Penha, Lucélia Carvalho, Carmen Ortiz, Christine Strussman and João Pinho.

Community and Ecosystems Ecology

This research line is aimed at understanding species distribution patterns within communities. Ecosystem processes are also studied in this research line. The permanent researchers in this research line are Roberto Silveira, Victor Landeiro, Thiago Izzo, Catia Nunes da Cunha, Carmen Ortiz, Wolfgang Junk, Marcos Soares, Domingos Rodrigues, João Pinho, Christine Strussmann, Marinez Isaac Marques, Pierre Girard, Leonardo Moreira. The invited researchers in this research line are Leonardo Moreira (PNPD) e Izaias Fernandes (DCR).

Biogeography and Natural History

This research line studies current and historical multi-hierarchical processes which cause variation in biodiversity, mainly including natural history and biogeography studies, but also encompassing taxonomy and systematics of organisms, fundamental characteristics of good biogeographical studies. The permanent researchers in this line are Fernando Vaz de Mello, Domingos Rodrigues, Rogério Rossi, Marinez Isaac Marques and Lucélia Carvalho.
